Maritri Garrett

Musician

"Making music is breathing to me. I began playing piano at two and a half in my parent’s home and I don’t remember a time that I didn’t play. I started studying formally at the age of five but really didn’t learn to read music until seven .I had always been able to play what I heard. Now I could read as well and the sky became the limit. My voice emerged because I had stories within me that begged to be told. The instrument wasn’t enough. I needed words and harmonies. They came easily but were kept inside . I sang publicly in high school for the first time and loved the connection I felt.

I attended Fisk University in Nashville and became a Jubilee Singer while getting a bachelors degree in Biology. I was in the lab all week and on the road most weekends singing spirituals and making money for the university. I went to Howard for pharmacy school to pacify my mother’s need for something to fall back on. But wound up switching to music after a miserable semester. After the switch, I got my first real gig and never looked back.I studied classical piano with Raymond Jackson and Charles Timbrell and jazz piano with Geri Allen and vocal jazz with Grady Tate. I got another bachelors in composition and a masters in jazz studies. I started my first band, HUE with founding members Deirdre Pascall and Latanya Peoples. Three women instrumentalists playing originals and vocalizing.

Upon leaving Howard, I went to New Jersey to apprentice with Geri Allen . I spent the next two years on the road with her and the likes of Bettty Carter, Dave Holland , Jack Dejohnette, Dwayne Dolphin and met many other jazz luminaries. I went back and forth to DC for gigs with Hue and then moved back to pursue the band which promptly started to fall apart. Shana Tucker then joined and there were two of us. We planned a move to New York to continue our journey. If you can make it there, you’ll make it anywhere. And we did. We were commissioned to write a ballet at the Washington Ballet where I had been employed as a staff pianist, And we did many gigs. The band broke up, as bands do and I found myself as a sideman in the indie community, the Black Rock Coalition and classically. After several years as a solo act, I fell in love in the process of making a record. As I was pushed out of love I found a new love. I bought a guitar at the urging of my bestie. I took my little Martin everywhere and was performing on stage after two weeks. Something took hold ands I began writing songs that were intimate and tell all. I had always written more general songs but suddenly , I was a singer songwriter with no huge instrument to hide behind.

Around 2009, my father passed . I was in sort of a tailspin. Learning the guitar and finding my way. I met V Jeffrey Smith at a gig and invited him to sit in with me at a gig I had taken for the sole purpose of learning how two play guitar. He came and sat in. I invited David Pilgrim the following week after hearing him play his compositions. We became the founding members of the Soulfolk experience. We are a coalition of multi instrumentalists, writers and vocalists. It has been one of the largest blessings in my life and we continue to make music when we can.

I moved back to California to take care of my mother who suddenly took ill and passed quickly. My brother too became ill and passed. He left me the greatest gift… his three children .During the pandemic, I began Reunion of souls, five nights a week , me at the piano in my living room , singing songs for folks around the world. Friends had been asking me to Facebook live to make them feel better. Words turned into a song and one song blossomed into an hour , Monday through Friday of requests, TV nights, and favorites. I have been going for a year and will continue as long as I can."

Amy Madrid

Teacher

Amy is best known for giving out free hugs and “making you do weird things” in class. Her intention is to blend Yoga's sacred philosophy with modern day movements so you can function in everyday life. Her teaching style is lighthearted but heart filled. While she loves to teach energizing & empowering classes, her true passion is Yin Yoga. The long holds, soft tension on the joints, and quietness has helped her calm an anxious mind. You can expect to breathe, move (or surrender in Yin), and rest in her classes.

Yoga has been in and out of Amy’s life since the early 2000s but did not make an impact until 2013. She attended classes at different yoga studios and became enthralled with Yoga philosophy. She sought out many teachers, tried different styles, and read dozens of Yoga books. She couldn't soak up enough to understand the grand scale of it all. Hint, hint-she is still on that quest! It is one reason she loves Yoga, the learning is never ending. She realized Yoga was not a workout but a way to evolve into the best human possible.

In 2017 she studied under Dr. Paul Jerard, E-RYT 500 and received her 200 hour Hatha certification. She found mentors to study with and continued to further her Yoga education over the years. Covid-19 luckily provided Amy the time to “Zoom” into Rishikesh, India and earn a 500 hour mutli-style certification. Teaching has always been in her veins, but through Yoga is where she found her teaching path. She would be honored to walk next to you on your journey.

Vanessa Poster

Teacher

Vanessa Poster was born and raised in Los Angeles. She received her BA and MA from Stanford University and worked with charitable organizations for more than 35 years, in fundraising and strategic planning.

Vanessa started writing in 1997 to help her cope with the depression brought on by infertility. She came back to writing after her divorce and again after the death of her second husband, Morgan Kramer. After Morgan’s death in 2015, she wrote and healed. Most of the poems in this volume had their inception during that first year. She gained much while writing through her grief process, inspiring her to develop a writing class for people dealing with grief and loss.

Vanessa is a member of the Los Angeles Poets and Writer’s Collective and The Poetry Salon. She has studied Method Writing with Jack Grapes for more than 25 years and has taught creative writing since 2017. In 2020, she expanded her teaching practice into an online writing salon reaching students from all over the world.

She married John Rubiner in 2020 with an international online audience of 250 screens, giving everyone a much-needed boost during some of the darkest days of the pandemic. With their common loss of a spouse to cancer, they share a determination to live fully, as we never know how many moments we will get.

Vanessa’s poems have appeared in Snapdragon: A Journal of Art & Healing, The Thieving Magpie, Fourth & Sycamore, ONTHEBUS, I’ll have Wednesday and Went to Ralphs to Get A Chicken. Her work is also included in a number of anthologies: Grief Dialogues The Book: Stories on Love and Loss; The Best of the Poetry Salon; and Stories from the Muses: How to Become a Better Writer. Her poem, Butterfly Bowls was recognized as a semi-finalist for the Jack Grapes Poetry Prize at Cultural Daily. This is her first collection of poetry.

Christie Hall

Teacher

I am a teacher with no woo-woo. Suffering from joint and disc degeneration, I began studying yoga in 1995. The pain relief brought on by regular practice led me to want to share the gift of yoga and to start teaching in 1997. Since then, I have studied continuously with senior teachers of Iyengar yoga. I specialize in assisting students struggling with physical problems. My personal physical problems have given me a particular interest in anatomy in the context of yoga and in studying therapeutic yoga modifications. But far beyond the physical, yoga has transformed my life in a journey of discovery that continues every day.

Nova

Teacher

For over a decade yoga has been a constant in my life. Yoga has become a staple and my first choice of “medicine” to go to for my own mental and physical health. Even before taking formal training, I have been sharing yoga with friends on hikes and other gatherings. As an intuitive healer I enjoy bringing an individual approach to each class, rejuvenating the spirit and soothing the soul through movement. My choice of music depends on the mood of the day, and often comes with a few surprises. The goal is to leave one feeling alive and refreshed, with renewed focus and energy, and perhaps a slightly new outlook on life.

Johnathan Thomas

Teacher

I have never been an athlete. I've always been a seeker for truth and wisdom. I have a PhD in Psychology and Religion and my Doctorate of Divinity with a concentration in Spiritual Counseling. I'm a 500 hour Registered Yoga teacher with additional certificates in Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga. I have a passion for movement and working with the mind. I'm a former Buddhist monk.

Yoga and meditation changed my life.

When I first started yoga, I didn't have strength or flexibility. I couldn't hold a plank or touch my toes. What I did have was back pain from working and a ton of stress from a fast-paced lifestyle.

Yoga and meditation provided me the tools to lead a healthier, easier life; one where I prioritized my well-being so everything else could fall into place.

I want to deliver these tools to you in a way that makes sense for modern life. No acrobatics. No mystical bullshit. Just useful, practical stuff.

The Heart of Life: Hike, Yoga & Mindfulness

Saturday October 7, 2023, 9:30-10:30 am

I’m so excited to announce be teaching this year at the big bear festival ! 🌲🌲

I’ve always loved being in nature. It’s when I feel an almost instantaneous sense of calm and peace, along with an intense awareness of being alive.

About the class:

Spending time in nature has healing and restorative power, increases well-being, helps alleviate stress and anxiety, promotes creativity, assists with recovery from mental fatigue.

In this beautiful Hike, Yoga and Mindfulness class will be consciously engaging our senses when out hiking. This aims to  not calm the mind and and grounds us relaxing both mind and body.

Mindfully connecting with all our senses, the beautiful green trees, the fresh smell of nature, and life around us.

We will finish with a nice refreshing Integrated yoga practice to help your body recover.

Amanda Carlin

Teacher

Amanda is leading SUP Yoga on Friday as a special featured offering. "I am dedicated educator committed to promoting positive mental and physical development in all ages! With degrees in psychology and biology, as well as being a register yoga teacher, I feel most in my element developing mental and physical strengths in the outdoors. I have been working in education and mental health since 2009 and have more recently began incorporating yoga into my teaching techniques. As a resident of the Big Bear area, I love guiding people in using our natural surroundings to help better connect to themselves."

Veronica Correa

Teacher

In 2010 during my high school years a seed was planted in me after choosing yoga as my elective for physical education. It wasn’t until later down the road where this seed began to sprout after stepping foot into The Yoga Den in Corona, California where I took my first yoga class. There was a fire that sparked within me and I knew that I would continue and grow this practice forever.

I have been practicing yoga for over 6 years and have received a 200 hour certification through The Yoga Den.

As someone who works a 9-5 job Monday-Friday finding balance between work and personal life can be challenging from time to time. That is why I value the importance of living a well-balanced lifestyle, staying active, and incorporating yoga and meditation to our daily lives.

Yoga has given me so much more than the physical ability to improve my strength, flexibility, and balance. It has given me the confidence and courage to step into my power and find my purpose on this planet.

I am a student of life and divinely guided by the universe. I am always learning and growing so that I am able to teach and practice alongside all of you. My goal as a yoga instructor is to provide my students with peace and confidence that I feel every time I step onto my mat. Let’s flow together!

Jeannette Ali with Raising Consciousness Yoga

Teacher

Jeannette first discovered yoga in community college in 2005. Always thinking of herself as inflexible and not being able to touch her toes in forward fold, she became fascinated with yoga’s capabilities to increase flexibility and strength. Jeannette practiced yoga solely as a physical exercise until 2017 when she had a profound heart opening experience in a yoga class. That’s when all the aspects of yoga opened up to her and she enrolled at Western Yoga College for their 7 month long 200 hour teacher training. Described as “one of the most important times of her life” Jeannette knew that yoga needed to be shared with the world. Since her YTT graduation in May of 2019, Jeannette’s classes have evolved to include guided meditation and crystal bowl sound healing. Her yoga style is diverse including yin, chair, restorative, and slow powerful flows. Jeannette is a mom of 3 and started free mommy and me yoga classes for her local community. She is currently developing a free coaching program to help connect women to mindfulness and the self. Jeannette is a nature lover and enjoys outdoor adventures with her family.

Peg McKnight

After a lifetime of questing after inner peace, I’ve discovered that it’s never what is happening around you that causes stress, but how you choose to handle it. Choose Happy Vibes gives you the tools to resist stress and negativity and find true joy, contentment, and happiness instead.

Tara Swoboda

Teacher

Hi there, yogis! I'm a yogi mama from California. I tried yoga for the first time while in college as a way to create some weekly quiet time for my mind. I couldn't touch my toes in a forward fold at my first class, but I fell in love and have been practicing ever since.

That was back in 2003, and since then I've tried various types of yoga, attended yoga retreats, immersed myself in yoga workshops, completed a vegan nutritionist diploma, and finally earned my RYT200 with Big Bear Yoga nearly 20 years after my first yoga class. I'm now working on my RYT500 with Cloud Nine Yoga and love teaching beginners. My yoga classes focus on embracing personal strengths, establishing calm, and appreciating where and who we are in the moment. I hope to bring new yogis the same feelings of Sukha and Sthira that I discovered, bringing them the confidence of everlasting inner strength, comfort and joy.

I offer personalized in-person yoga sessions and yoga hikes in Big Bear as well as gentle weekly online stretching sessions. For our kiddo yogis, I offer online kids yoga camps to build strong foundations and explore yoga in a fun, safe way. Join me in person or online to start or enhance your practice at yogaprayer365.com.

My yoga sessions at the 2023 Big Bear Yoga Festival focus on Sun Salutations -- I hope to see you there, yogis!

Namaste and Blessings,

Tara

Leeza Villagomez of YOGADEN Health Spa

Teacher

Leeza Villagomez was drawn to yoga right out of high school. The next steps in life did not resonate with the expectations of society. After experiencing chakra meditation and the benefits she quickly realized there is another way to balance "this thing called life” she wanted to know more emotionally, mentally and physically. Leeza is no stranger to learning ancient lineages as her Portuguese mother comes from Maui, Hawaii. Leeza grew up on a small farm, showed horses, practiced Hawaiian, Tahitian, Polynesian and Mauri dancing 3 days a week and was part of a “Halau”. Most of her birthdays were Luaus with the Boteilho Kula(family). It was a natural step for her to begin practicing yoga. Over the course of many years Leeza has had the pleasure of studying many different styles of yoga, Ayurveda to Vedanta and she feels as if she just started the journey to self-realization. Having added ancient Shamanic practices she believes this is a tool everyone can benefit from. Join Leeza for an eclectic flow class for all levels.

She invites you to crack open your heart, weave in the 5 senses and 5 elements in this all levels yoga class. Breathing, moving, laughing, stretching, dancing, meditating and healing all included. Lokah, Samastah, Sukhino, Bhavantu… May all beings everywhere be happy and free.

Katie Felt

Teacher

I am a married mother of 5 children who recently left a demanding job as a hairdresser to pursue my calling as a yoga instructor. I completed my 200 hr Teacher Training at WYC in Riverside in 2019. Since then, I have taught students one on one, in a gym setting, and have even volunteered at Hunt Elementary School in San Bernardino, Ca. teaching yoga and yogic theory to 2nd and 3rd grade students. Yoga has been a transformative asset in my life. What began as a desire to teach pregnant women how to practice yoga as they ventured into motherhood, soon became a passionate desire to share yoga at all levels, in all aspects, to anyone who will listen. My personal yogic instructional style usually involves setting an intention that falls within the teachings of the eight limbs of yoga. From there, we breathe, Om, connect, flow, release, surrender, heal. Yoga is such a gift… one thatI hope to share more and more. -Namaste

Kathryn Demke

Teacher

The first time I did yoga, I was not impressed. It was a stretching based class, and not very exciting to a young college girl. Many years later I was recovering from a hospital stay that I barely escaped from, when I tried yoga again. It was a Kundalini Yoga class focusing on spinal mobility, and abdominal strength. Now this was exactly what my body needed and I was hooked! Since then I have taught Kundalini Yoga combined with other meditation practices utilizing breathe work and simple movements. Besides yoga and meditation in my life, I raise 4 spirited kids, grow a little garden, and do facials in my home Spa Space.

Yamuna Body Rolling: Pelvic Floor and Hips

Yamuna Body Rolling is all about stimulating bone. Once you stimulate bone, tendon attachments begin to soften, muscles begin to elongate and you start freeing up restrictions in the joint. This process helps to release tension and pain in the body, improves circulation and lymphatic flow, and increases flexibility and range of motion. It also helps to improve posture and alignment, as well as reduce the risk of injury.

Overall, this practice offers a holistic approach to physical wellness by addressing not only the muscles, but also the bones and joints.

In this class, you'll learn touch & tell anatomy of your own parts, and how to personalize your ball routine. Finding Lift, strength and openness in the pelvis.

your body will only ask for more!

Janet Viscome

Teacher

I am an E-RYT 200 Yoga Instructor and Athlete. After a spondylolisthesis (lumbar compression and slippage) diagnosis in my mid-20s, I started yoga and practiced at Santa Monica Power Yoga starting in 1998. In my experience, yoga is a powerful practice that counters the effects of high impact sports, sedentary work life, and an increasingly stressful work and social environment. I received my RYT 200 in 2012 and have been teaching ever since (e.g. Anam Cara (Riverside) and The Yoga Room (Redlands/online)). In 2017 I started teaching children’s yoga at CECA Yoga Club (Yucaipa). I believe yoga is a wonderful way to connect with yourself, maintain healthy movement, and create strength and centering; concepts I do my best to weave into my classes. When not practicing yoga, I prefer to be snow skiing in Mammoth or wake-surfing in Lake Havasu (or Needles). I am grateful to be part of the yoga community and the Big Bear Yoga Festival. Namaste

Ryan Heflin

Musician

With a light and dark, soulful, singer-songwriter/indie rock sound, full of the feels and reminiscent of Hozier, Trevor Hall, and Alex Serra, paired with conscious and poetic lyrics that passionately express such themes as childhood, nature, the wonder of existence, the beauty and tragedy of the human condition, and a healthy subversion of societal norms, both sensual and intellectual, metaphysical and deeply human; the music of Ryan Heflin is an experience that takes us beyond the prosaic and back into life as poetry.

Ryan got his start as the resident musician of The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel for 8 years (2012-2020). He now gives himself over fully to writing, recording, and performing his soulful, iconoclastic, singer-songwriter words, set to dark, hurts-so-good indie rock vibrations at venues and Festivals as both a solo acoustic act and full band. His debute album ’Where Does the Wonder Go?’ shows us the start of something un-usual and wonder-full.
