Shannon Liebel - Special Post Festival Sunday Workshop - Yoga Playground: Arm Balance & Inversion Workshop
Shannon started her career path as a Clinical Counselor after she received her MA in 2008. During her MA program, she was the team director of a competitive gymnastics program. In her youth, Shannon trained in artistic and acrobatic gymnastics. When she discovered yoga in 2005, it was the perfect balance of the mental work she enjoyed in Psychology and the physical movement of the body that she loved in gymnastics. Shannon completed her 200 Hour Teacher Training with Yax Yoga Concepts in Virginia Beach, VA in 2013 and has been teaching ever since. She received her 300 Hour Teacher Training with Beyond Bryce in Koh Samui, Thailand in 2018. Her teachers during her 300 hour training included Dice Iida-Klein, Briohny Smith, Honza Lafond, Claudine Lafond, and Mathieu Boldron. She strongly believes in the connection between mind, body, and soul, and this reflects in her Vinyasa style teaching. She loves the constant movement of the body in Vinyasa and feels that it helps us to find strength within and bring awareness into the present moment. Although arm balances and inversions are offered in her classes, modifications are always provided to make practitioners of every level comfortable during their practice.
Class Description: On Saturday Shannon will offer two classes at Big Bear Yoga Festival 2019. Join her for Vinyasa – Open Heart Yoga at 11am for a heart expansive and opening practice. At 2:30pm Shannon will share a little taste of the Sunday morning follow-on workshop with a delightful Intro to Yoga Playground: Arm Balances & Inversions. This mostly intermediate class will be a Vinyasa flow structured around teaching arm balances and inversions. We will have a gentle warm up preparing us for multiple variations of different arm balances, and eventually end up upside down in inversions! Modifications are offered throughout the class so that practitioners of every level get the sense of flying, and get to enjoy this playful side of yoga!

Here is what Brian shares, “After finishing my training with Leeza Villagomez, I was asked to be an assistant in her teacher training. I also have had the pleasure to study with Saul David Raye, Janet Stone and Shiva Rea. Yoga is more then just asana to me now; in the beginning I was attracted to physical benefits of the practice, now it’s just the complete mind body connection and how I view situations and my reactions. My training has really been focused on less is more, but also learning how the let go of the baby blanket and explore while being safe and conscious. I hope students that practice with me can just let go and drop expectations and really enjoy their inhales and exhales, while respecting where they are at in the moment with the heart open.”

From Betsy, “A diagnosis of fibromyalgia gave me the incentive to come to yoga to help heal my body, mind and spirit. I was certified by my Guru through the Sajni Yoga Center in Bangalore, India. Other blessings along the way include co-founding Gita Yoga Learning Center where I have trained and certified several 200 and 500 hour yoga instructors, and provide continuing education units through Yoga Alliance. I was able to study with Dr. Larry Payne with whom I continued my education in POLY (Prime of Life Yoga) obtaining my POLY500 through SAMATA/LMU. I received my certification in Yoga Nidra with Dr. Marc Halpern (California College of Ayurveda) and most recently acquired my certification in Back Care Yoga (Vista Yoga Academy). My own body and health issues showed me that not only was I going to heal myself but that it was my Dharma to help others do the same. There is no greater joy than watching people leave our time together, with happy faces and lighter hearts. With that in mind I followed my calling even further obtaining my Reiki Master certification leading me to the world of energy healing.
I have been given the opportunity to study with some of the most amazing teachers. I have gathered wisdom from the masters to the ones who are not as well known. There is nothing quite as lovely as sharing everything they have given me to help others heal their bodies, their minds, their spirit by showing them the joys of finding and living their truth.
It is a blessing to serve and to be a part of a community of loving, caring healers.”

Being a first grade teacher by day – but a yoga teacher in the evenings and on weekends – has made Lisa masterful at breaking down and communicating the intricacies of yoga poses in a very clear, concise and transformative way. She promises not to speak to you like you are in first grade! However, as you move in and out of poses in Lisa’s class she will speak to you about the nuts and bolts of your body. Anatomy, biomechanics, postural alignment, and the beneficial therapeutic aspects of yoga are Lisa’s passion and are integrated into each class in a fun and informative way. Her focus is on helping students get to know the areas of their bodies that may be underused, overused, or otherwise abused, and move them toward balance.
Lisa has practiced and taught hatha yoga at studios around Redlands since 1998. An avid learner, she has received certifications from Erich Schiffmann, Anusara yoga, Śraddhā yoga, and Yoga Tune Up®. Lisa also draws regularly on other trainings emphasizing practices that align, heal, stretch, strengthen and stabilize. Her repertoire includes the unique therapeutic element of self-massage with myo-fascial release balls, to relieve tense or restricted muscles, and help you live better in your body.
Lisa views the physical practice of yoga as a way of moving toward deeper awareness in our bodies, which ultimately leads to deeper awareness in our hearts. “When we focus intently on our breath and physical bodies, our minds quiet to the other distractions that create veils over our True Self and what we deeply desire in our hearts.” With wit and honest transparency, Lisa brings inspiration and healing to her students by helping them look at all aspects of life with a practical, life-supporting philosophy, on and off the mat.

LoriAnn Bejarano, LMSW-ASW
From LoriAnn, “I am a Texas License Master Social Worker and a Clinical Associate Social Worker in California, who has worked extensively as a medical social worker since 1998 with patients and families facing a chronic and terminal illnesses by providing therapeutic interventions on honoring end of life process, regaining quality of life, living with grief/loss, and facilitating support groups. A common thread among many of my patients and their love ones was: losing a reason to laugh; and feeling confined and restricted from reconnecting to their inner joy and freedom. After becoming a certified Vinyasa Yoga instructor in 2016, I pursued my Laughter Yoga certifications: Yoga Laughter leader and teacher, and have been incorporating the various techniques of found in Laughter yoga and Vinyasa Yoga to facilitate healing of the mind, body and soul. I continue to promote these methods in community settings, as well as, offering training and certification for those interested in spreading laughter and joy.”
Following along the concepts related to natural movement, dance, child-like joy, and breath, and guided by a certified Laughter Yoga instructor, Laughter Yoga is a delightful practice of intentional laughter. Each session includes the fundamentals of what is yogic breath, simple stretches and laughter exercises. Lastly, crowning the laughter session by a brief gratitude and meditation, similar to Savasana, aimed at being completely awake while being fully relaxed.
Some of the benefits of Laughter Yoga includes: increase blood flow, decreased cortisone levels, increase of endorphins, decrease stress levels, and promotes overall sense of well-being and even relieve pain. Prior yoga experience is not required, nor any degree of athleticism; only a desire to re-ignite a child-like laughter within oneself. Laughter Yoga sessions are a judgement free zone where one is encouraged to experience the full benefits of healing through laughter. All levels welcome.

Alec Johnson is a classically trained guitarist from Big Bear, CA. Although his roots are in classical music, his artistic ability ranges throughout a multitude of various genres. Alec can provide therapeutic meditation music, formal jazz, and acoustic performances.
Alec’s intention with music is to facilitate a space for listeners to enjoy beautiful music while consciously acknowledging the automatic cognitive processes that are developed by the perceptions of our experiences throughout our upbringing. Alec creates a space where the listener can reprogram and/or refine less than proactive thought patterns, as well as design completely new paradigms.
Alec will be sharing his amazing music outside at Big Bear Yoga Festival in the afternoon.
Alona Smith is a friend of Big Bear Yoga Festival, and has been with us since the first year. Here is what Alona shares, “I began practicing Yoga over fifteen years ago, yet I feel I have been practicing asanas (postures) since I was a child and before I knew these postures had names. A knee injury I received after running a marathon led me to my first class. There I received more than just a workout. It was spiritual and emotional and a sure introduction into what would then become my way of life.
My intentions as a teacher and as founder of the Anam Cara studio are to be compassionate, empowering, and inspiring, and to create a safe and fun environment where students can learn to listen to, honor and respect their bodies, achieve more balance in life, reduce stress, and increase flexibility. I believe that continual physical movement, meditation, mind/body awareness and good nutrition are the road to well being and happiness. I received my teacher training under Scott Miller at Western Yoga College. My classes emphasize a balance of strength and ease in the body, with attention to alignment and safety. I enjoy working with people of all ages, body sizes, shapes, abilities and genders, helping them feel comfortable with yoga and themselves.”
Alona is generously teaching two classes at the festival this year! For beginners, she is sharing a special Yoga Basics class. Designed just for beginners, she is teaching all of the fundamentals to feel comfortable in your first yoga class. She will talk about and demonstrate props, discuss terms you may hear and answer your questions. For all levels of student, she is also on the schedule to teach an Ashtanga Yoga Practice.
